Beats, electronic samples, poetry, movement to the rhythm of the spoken word and live music - Noord Nederlandse Dans presents Instrumental. Three world premières with choreography by artistic director Stephen Shropshire and regular guest choreographer Emanuel Gat. In Instrumental Shropshire is inspired by two extremes: Derrick C. Brown’s theatrical and occasionally dramatic texts and the abstract and melancholic music of David Lang. Emanuel Gat is inspired by the work process itself and is composing his own music.
For the work ‘Strange Light’, Shropshire is collaborating with a number of musicians from the Noordpool Orchestra, conducted by Reinout Douma, and, with poet and performer Derrick C. Brown. Brown is one of the most prominent American beat poets and performs frequently in different parts of the world with help from music, spoken word and sometimes even a little magic. Multi-instrumentalist Emily Wells and singer/songwriter Timmy Straw were asked by Brown to create the music for the poem Brown had written for Instrumental. All three will present live interpretations at the première.
‘World to Come’ (version for solo cello) by composer David Lang inspired Shropshire to create the work ‘Now I lay me down’. The music will be played live by cellist Daniëlle Buizer. TV program ‘Solo for a Child’ saw Dutch-Cameroon Buizer standing under their spotlight at a young age. She later won first prize at the national competition and at the Princess Christina Competition, where she also won the public’s prize. For the past seasons she has appeared as a soloist with various national and international orchestras.
For Instrumental, Emanuel Gat is creating a duet for two women, Time Touching Themes. He will also be credited for the music composition and lighting and costume designs. Gat is known internationally for his visually entrancing dance, his musicality and innovative movement language. This is the first time he will create a new work for Noord Nederlandse Dans.
On the 15th, 16th and 18th of February Instrumental stands on Chutzpah! Festival in Vancouver Canada.
